5 Health Benefits of Millets

Millet is a small, round whole grain grown in India, Nigeria, and other Asian and African countries. While it may look like a seed, millet’s nutritional profile is similar to that of cereals. Millet has gained popularity because it’s gluten-free and boasts high protein, fiber, and antioxidant contents. Some of the major millets include: pearl, foxtail, proso (or white) and finger (or ragi).

Health Benefits:

1. May Help Control Blood Glucose Levels

When compared to wheat and maize, Millets are high on nutrients, gluten-free. The presence of a high amount of dietary fibre, proteins with all essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals helps in stabilizing the blood sugar levels.

2. Weight Management

Millets are great for all weight watchers. Swapping rice with millets daily can lower accumulation of fat, improve gut health and help you in achieving sustained weight loss.

3. May Protect Your Heart

The soluble fiber in millet can help reduce the amount of “bad” cholesterol in your blood—a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Some studies show that millet can also raise your “good” cholesterol levels and lower triglycerides. Because cholesterol is such a big risk factor for heart disease, eating millet regularly may help keep your heart healthier.

4. Improve Digestive Health

The presence of a good amount of dietary fibre in millets works well to improve the digestive system function. It combats constipation, flatulence, bloating, cramping, regularizes the bowel function and boosts the immune system.

5. Satiates Hunger

Many carbohydrates such as rice and wheat are easy to breakdown once consumed, leaving a person hungry within few hours of their meal. This makes people resort to unhealthy eateries to satiate their hunger. Millets have harder structures and does not breakdown easily in the digestive system, keeping you far enough away from unhealthy eating habits.
